ReplyDriving in this area has gotten so much worse over the years it's no surprise people try to avoid it, including me. The traffic is terrible. Many drivers are sloppy and rude. Gas is expensive. Parking is scarce, expensive, and enforcement is brutal. Speed cameras, tag readers, and red light cameras are metastasizing. State fees and insurance keep going up. And to top it off, many of the road surfaces are in terrible shape.
I live in neighborhood where I walk to Metro and to many activities, but I still have cars and enjoy the freedom of being able to drive it wherever and whenever I want. Long gone are the days where a young person around here with a part time job can buy their own cheap car and get it legally on the road.

ReplyWelcome to Maryland. A mean little overtaxed police state where every citizen is a potential criminal who just hasn't been caught yet.

ReplyIt's a low down dirty shame that RiRa is closing. The food was surprisingly good for a pub and the atmosphere was great. It was also within walking distance of my house. It will be missed!

Then why did they begin a pursuit only to break it off at the district line? I have my doubts as to this crime not involving a life threatening offense. Security guards at high-end jewelry stores are typically armed and there is little doubt that the people working in the store were threatened with violence. The information released by the police has been minimal so far. Obviously, accidents happen with police chases and police shootings, but in this case it seems that the threshold of breaking off the chase was the district line.

ReplyIt is not odd to have a cell phone grabbed right out of a distracted person's hand. Perhaps they were walking around talking on the phone after leaving CVS or Staples and their phone was snatched.

ReplyReports indicate that County Police were in pursuit and broke of their chase when the suspect vehicle crossed the district line at Chevy Chase Circle. I have seen reports that was done because it was not a crime of violence. That doesn't make sense since there were also reports that there was a Cartier security person that was overpowered by the robbers. Furthermore, these jewelry store guards are typically armed. There's is much information that isn't being released.
One thing's certain. If County Police are not going to chase felons across the line into DC, we will see more crime in Friendship Heights. The Gap store a half block away was robbed the same day! Our little version of the Taliban fleeing to sanctuary in Pakistan.

ReplyWelcome to our mean little overtaxed police state where the pretext for police action is a seatbelt check, but a minority of the stops yield a seatbelt violation. Next we'll have stop and frisk like in NYC. Or they'll ask permission to look around your house since why would you object if you have nothing to hide?

A lovely program to "Ticket and Educate." Welcome to our mean little overtaxed police state where you can be stopped and scrutinized for just being out and about.
