On the article Voter Turnout Down in Every District

Joe Smith
1:22 pm on Thursday, November 10, 2011
Although I concur that low voter turnout is a good indicator of disinterest in an election, I disagree that the candidates ignored these issues. (I asked the Mayor a question about public safety at the NCPCA candidate forum last month.) Besides, if it's true that "we the people" are responsible for the government we get, then it's up to us to bring those "serious issues" to the candidates and press them for answers. Did you go to any campaign events, civic association meetings, or contact the candidates to see where they stand on the issues you identified? In my experience, our council members (whether elected or running for for office) are very accessible and will usually take the time to discuss their positions with city residents.

ReplyWow, those are some low figures for voter turnout. Maybe folks were scared of running into Goatman on their way to the polls.

Pam -- I have known Mr. Kabir for years and worked with him on several projects (CP Day, trash pick-ups, NCPCA stuff, etc) and I can tell you that the rumors of his "having an agenda for the Al Huda school" are unfounded. I don't agree with him on everything, but there is no question that he has a sincere interest in making CP a better place to live.

ReplyThanks for the mention about the library -- we appreciate it! Just to be clear, the library will be housed in one room in the church's basement (the church is very active in the community, and other rooms are donated to other things, such as the community food bank). Thanks again. If folks want to get involved or have questions, they can contact us through our website: www.ncpinformant.com.

On the Blog Post Moving College Park Forward
Joe Smith

ReplyInstead of being a "top 20 College town," how about we shoot for one of America's "top 20 towns." Yes, that sets the bar higher, but some city residents have nothing to do with the university...let's not leave them out of our vision for the city's future. That said, I agree: let's continue promoting mixed-use projects areas already urbanized...and while we wait for these big developments along Rt. 1 (for that phrase "promoting mixed-use projects," means trying to entice big developers to do something) city leaders and citizens alike should think about some of the small-scale things that can be done to improve College Park, or perhaps the quality of life in CP, and then work together to make them happen. Mr. Gump is right: we need to "look around at the here and now" and do something about it. After all, If you want folks to wait while that vision becomes reality, you've got to give them a reason to stick around.

ReplyMatt, Yes -- 2 feet -- not 2 inches, and yes, The City's Tree and Landscape Board is currently developing a brochure about controlling bamboo infestations. We're discussing drafts now and will have the finished product on our site as soon as it's ready.
