The State Highway Administration recommends taking detour routes. The work on the outer loop work will begin at Kenilworth Avenue at 9 p.m.
Three right lanes on the northbound outer loop of the Capital Beltway at Kenilworth Avenue (Rt. 201) will close Friday night, according to the State Highway Administration. As a result of the triple-lane closure, drivers are encouraged to take detour routes, according to Charlie Gischlar, SHA spokesman. SHA is removing a demolition shield it put up as part of ongoing bridge work in Greenbelt. The work will begin at 9 p.m. on Friday, weather permitting. Lanes will reopen to traffic by 8 a.m. Saturday, SHA reports. The highway administration plans to close one right lane at 9 p.m., two at 10 p.m., and three at midnight. Gischlar recommends that drivers plan ahead and leave themselves plenty of extra time. Cars can take the Baltimore-…

Engine 111 shielded emergency personnel from the potentially fatal impact of a fast-moving car, authorities said.
Prince George's County officials say the careful placement of a fire engine at the scene of a recent crash in College Park may have made the difference between life and death. On Aug. 18 at around 4:15 a.m., fire, EMS, and Maryland State Police units responded to an accident on the outer loop of the Capital Beltway between Route 1 and the I-95 split. As emergency personnel tended to motorists and surveyed the damage from the collision, another car reportedly slammed into a Branchville Volunteer Fire Company engine (no. 111) stationed at the scene. Fire officials said the engine had been positioned by the company's driver to shield those at the crash site from oncoming traffic. "This decision and correct placement saved lives and prevented …
