UMD Students Return for Spring Classes

Campus police issue safety tips for returning students.

As students returned to campus for the spring semester at the University of Maryland, campus police are asking them to take basic precautions which could help them avoid becoming a victim of crime. "While we will always do our best to keep you safe, we hope that you can take the first step in keeping yourself out of danger," wrote Chief David Mitchell of the University of Maryland Police Department. "I hope this information serves as a reminder of what you can do to reduce your chance of being the victim of a crime and to help you remain safe during the school year." Arrests Made in Break-Ins at UMD Varsity Team House

Three men, including one student, face charges of burglary and theft in the case.

University of Maryland police say three people have been arrested in connection with a string of break-ins at the College Park campus's Varsity Team House. Igor Cooper Rosensteel, Richard Nathan Landa, and Ian Robert Hammer face charges of burglary and theft in the case. Hammer is a student at UMD. According to police, athletic equipment worth more than $20,000 was taken from the facility in November and December, much of it belonging to the university's lacrosse and baseball programs. The perpetrators reportedly forced their way into the building. Many of items were then being resold on an auction website, police said.
