Variety in Training

Adding variety in the off season is a great way to add fun to a fitness routine.

Since July, most local runners have followed a training program.  Each day, the workout is set out for us.  Although sticking to a program is the key to the success of any marathon or triathlon season, the routine can quickly stifle our love of the sport. But with the final big marathon of the season behind us and the shorter distance race season wrapping up in the next few weeks, we can find that joy again.  One of the best ways I have found to bring the fun back into training during the off season is to add variety. Most of us will not give up running all together during the off season.  If we continue to run at least three days a week we will be able to come back into the racing season ready to go. But adding variety to our routines can…

Finding Your Yoga Fit

Benefits of yoga are undeniable, but it is not a one-size-fits-all sport. It might take trial and error to discover the class that's right for you.

I’m among a bit of a competitive family … and a bit might be putting it too mildly. For example, my sister-in-law has a hard time at yoga class because she is always opening her eyes and peaking at the other students to make sure she is relaxing better than the rest. While I am also competitive, I am most competitive with myself. I love running, biking and swimming because they offer me the opportunity to compete with my most recent race time or my fastest pace.  So though I understand the benefits, I have struggled to find the right yoga fit for me.  Unfortunately, I had come to think of yoga as forced relaxation. But in the past year I have been lucky enough to find three different kinds of yoga that appeal to my sense of competition. …

Maryland Triathlon Team Competes in Half Ironman

Training and competing together, the Maryland Triathlon Team conquered the Patriot's Half Ironman in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Endurance sports are mental; not in the Harry Potter, “You are mental” sense of the word, but in that it takes a certain amount of mental fortitude to even get to the starting line of some events. One of the best ways to be mentally prepared for longer distance races, whether it is a marathon or a triathlon, is to train and race with a club or team. For students at the University of Maryland, there is such an opportunity. This weekend, I had the pleasure of meeting three members of the Maryland Triathlon Team -- Coach David Miller and two of his fellow athletes, Patrick Mohl and Bill McCrea.  The three competed in Williamsburg, Virginia in the Patriot's Half Ironman, a 72.3-mile multisport event. (A half ironman event is traditionally 70.3…

Testing the Waters in Triathlon

Considering trying your first tri? The Terrapin Triathlon offers athletes a chance to dip their toes in the sport.

I am a runner by opportunity. Running was the first adult fitness program that was offered to me at a time when my choices were either to start a fitness program, or continue down the road to obesity. So I ran. And though I have never regretted the decision to become a runner, there came a time almost ten years ago when I realized that sticking with running as my only form of exercise was not going to work. After spending months recovering from a stress fracture by first swimming and then moving onto cycling, I decided my best course of action to avoid injuries in the future was triathlon. By mixing the three disciplines into my fitness routine, I have been able to avoid the injuries that running six days a week was causing.  But being the…

Just wanted to also mention that for women there are some really wonderful "all women" sprint triathlons, which are shorter distances, that are taking place all over the USA. I've competed in both the Iron Girl and the Danskin tris and each time it was a moving experience that I will hold in my heart forever. Lots of first timers and a lot of women of different shapes and sizes and ages! Also the…   more ›
