Students Raise $268K for Children's National Medical Center

Organizers of the 12-hour boogieing event broke a record for third-year Children's Miracle Network dance marathons.

Area sick and injured children are about to get a major financial boost, thanks to the fundraising efforts—and dancing stamina—of thousands of University of Maryland students. The third Terp Thon, a 12-hour dance marathon that took place at Cole Field House last Saturday, raised $268,027 for the Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., organizers report. The student group fell short of its $300,000 goal, but the amount well surpasses the total raised in the event's first two years combined: $56,000 in 2010 and $140,000 in 2011. Why Dance for 12 Hours? For the Kids.

Terp Thon shares 100 reasons to dance. The student group is readying for a 12-hour dance marathon on Saturday to support the Children's National Medical Center.

We shared a story yesterday about the efforts of a University of Maryland student organization called Terp Thon, which is prepping right now for a 12-hour dance marathon to support the Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. The group hopes to raise $300,000, all of which helps local kids struggling with medical issues. Check out this video the group put together, a collection of reasons why the students choose to dance for an entire half of a day. "So the kids can shake their groove thang," one student writes. "So the kids have a bright future," writes another. And "Every kid should learn how to make cupcakes." That's my personal favorite. Check out the video with this post. What's your favorite? Students Prepare for 12-Hour Dance Marathon for Local Kids

Terp Thon concludes third year of fundraising with half-day dance marathon this weekend.

At noon Saturday, about 2,000 dancers will stand poised in Cole Field House, readying themselves for 12 hours of dancing. But the daylong boogying isn’t about the dancers themselves. It's a fundraiser to support local kids treated at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. “These events are made to make the kids feel like rock stars,” said Ethan Wergelis-Isaacson, external director of Terp Thon, the University of Maryland branch of the nationwide Dance Marathon program. The UMd. Terp Thon supports 12 area children, several of whom will be at Saturday's event. The student organization works year round to raise money through a variety of fundraisers—including restaurant nights at College Park venues and an on-campus …
