Just what is Small Business Saturday and why should you support it in College Park?
Big name national retailers take the spotlight on Black Friday as their deep price cuts pull in shoppers in droves. What about those mom-and-pop businesses all over College Park and beyond that are the backbone of America’s economy? Just when do they get their day? That’s basically the question that was asked back in 2010 when the concept of Small Business Saturday was born. Small Business Saturday is “a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities,” the U.S. Small Business Administration explains on its website. Potomac Gourmet Market sits just a block away from MGM Resorts International's new visitor center at National Harbor. It is one of dozens of local businesses that may be affected by the outcome of Question 7, the Maryland ballot item that could decide whether MGM will be allowed to build a casino at the Prince George's County site. The visitor center opened in September as part of MGM’s campaign to win approval for a destination casino. Potomac Gourmet Market Manager Leonard Knight is confident the addition of a casino to National Harbor would bring business to his store.
