Installing panic buttons, electronic doors, and increasing armed police officers are on Thursday's agenda for the county's education board.
The Security Services department for the county's public schools will propose a beefed up security plan to the Prince George's County Board of Education Thursday that recommends panic buttons in every public school and more armed police on campuses. The department's proposal includes having two cameras and an electronic entry door controlled by an access buzzer at all public schools. Director of Security Services Michael Blow and Deputy Director Rex Barrett have teamed up with security staff to develop the recommendations, which will increase school security in a post-Sandy Hook world, according to Barrett. After the Newtown, CT school shooting, Maryland legislators are looking at a number of ways to make schools safer.
According to Annapolis Patch, delegates from Anne Arundel County are introducing legislation on Tuesday, Jan. 22 in hopes of increasing security and mental health services at public schools across the state. The proposed bill would also pay for an armed resource officer at each school. "If you really understand public schools in Maryland, you know this: They are becoming increasingly more difficult for classroom teachers because discipline is lacking at home and teachers are spending an increasing amount of time maintaining discipline in the classroom," said Del. Police officials will have extra patrols at the county's elementary schools Friday and Monday as a precaution.
Prince George's county police say they've increased their presence at local elementary schools in light of Friday's mass shooting in Newtown, CT. PGPD Spokeswoman Julie Parker tweeted that Prince George's police will be conducting patrols at county schools and maintaining a high profile. "There is no specific threat and/or intelligence to suggest that Prince George's County schools are at increased risk," police officials said in a statement. She added that the patrols will continue on Monday. With the start of a new school year, school safety is heavy on the minds of parents--which these days may mean worrying about possible violence at school. But studies show school-age children are nine times more likely to be unintentionallly injured--on the playground or elsewhere--than to be victims of violence at school, according the National Safe Kids Campaign (Safe Kids USA).
