Police Up Ante, Charge Councilwoman with Reckless Driving

After review, Prince George’s County police issued a citation and fine to Karen Toles.

A Prince George’s County Council member, accused by police last month of excessive speeding along the Capital Beltway, has now been issued a reckless driving citation and fine. Councilmember Karen Toles (D-Dist. 7) of Suitland was originally fined $90 and given a warning for speeding Feb. 22, according to Prince George's County police. Toles was traveling close to 105 mph—50 mph above the speed limit, according to WUSA9 and other news reports. But Tuesday, Prince George’s County Police officials said they reviewed the traffic stop and are now slapping Toles with a $510 fine and six points on her license in addition to the reckless driving citation, according to police. Toles was driving a county-issued vehicle at the time. She has since …

Yay! The police acted quickly to rectify their error so at least they won't come under too much scrutiny for playing favorites. Next time Karen Toles comes up for election I hope someone decent steps up to oppose her who respects public safety and will not try to intimidate the police.   more ›

Councilwoman Stripped of County-Owned Vehicle

Karen Toles must complete a driver improvement class.

A Prince George’s County councilwoman has been temporarily stripped of her county-issued vehicle after being fined for excessive speeding on the Capital Beltway. Councilmember Karen Toles (D-Dist. 7) of Suitland was fined $90 and given a warning for speeding Feb. 22, according to Prince George's County police. Toles was traveling close to 105 mph—50 mph above the speed limit, according to WUSA9 and other news reports. The county council issued a statement Friday saying that Toles was barred from using her county-issued Ford SUV until she completed a driver improvement class. “Council member Toles has stated that she will voluntarily enroll in a driver improvement class and discontinue use of her county-assigned vehicle during that time,” …

@ Old Gaffer Humorous post. But on the serious side, all county council members are given vehicles to conduct business and travel.   more ›

College Park Cares 5K Will Be a Prime Chance for Fast Times

After a hugely successful running last year, the College Park Cares 5K returns this weekend with even more fun and entertainment lined up for the whole family.

On the years I decide not to run a marathon, fall is my favorite time of year. All of my important races have passed. I have either met my goals and feel strong, or I have missed my goals and need a kick in the butt. Either way, every weekend from late September to after New Year’s Day, there is a 5K race somewhere in Maryland — a chance to challenge myself. Unfortunately I am going to miss one of the best 5Ks of the season this year, right here in College Park. This weekend, those runners looking to put their training to the test, to get that ever elusive 5K personal record (PR), can run the College Park Cares 5K for an all but guaranteed fast time. The race, a USA Track and Field-certified 5K, is flat and shady, and with the cooler …

Parenting on a Tightrope

The Weekday Race

Checking items off the to-do list, racing from one thing to the next...how do we end the cycle?

Brownies are in the oven. I volunteered to bake a snack for 25 people for Teacher Appreciation Week at L’s school. I chopped up leftover mini peanut butter cups, stolen from the kids’ Easter baskets, in order to make the brownies looked a little more “fancy” and less…from a box. This week has been a complete test of my endurance. I thought training for a triathlon was hard! At work I’m planning a charity event for 200 people and organizing four fundraising walks in three different states. After my hour-long drive home, I’m baking brownies while calling out spelling words over my shoulder to L. “Dishes- mommy wishes you would wash the dishes," I say, drawn-out so that he can really hear the word "dishes.” Our weekdays speed by, each one …

Great Article Gretchen. And you are right; most people live with schedules and racing around from one thing to the other. I call it my "juggling act". And there are times that I have to just let a ball fall. Raising 3 daughters by myself leaves in this state all the time. But one thing I have done in our lives I actually saw on a cartoon MANY MANY years ago with my eldest daughter. Since then we …   more ›
