A Closer Look at the UMd. Student Vying For School Board Seat

University of Maryland freshman Raaheela Ahmed, 18, will challenge incumbent Verjeana Jacobs in November.

With a passion for public service and 13 years of experience with the Prince George’s County Public School system, running for a seat on the Board of Education seems to be a natural fit for University of Maryland student Raaheela Ahmed. Yet, Ahmed’s years of experience come not as being a teacher or a parent in the system, but as a former student. The 18-year-old Bowie resident feels like her very recent and direct experience with the school system are what makes her an ideal candidate to represent District 5, where she garnered 35 percent of the vote in this month’s primary, earning her a place on the ballot this November.  “I think my experience in the school system showed me that the decisions made [by the Board] have a direct effect,” …

UMd. Student is 1 of 3 College Students to Win School Board Races

Raaheela Ahmed, 18, will be on the November ballot with the current board chair.

A University of Maryland student is one of three college students who won a primary race last week for the Prince George's County School Board. But at 18 years old, Raaheela Ahmed, a freshman biology and business major, is the youngest of them, The Diamondback reported. She raked in 34.3 percent of the votes for District 5, almost 1,000 votes ahead of incumbent and board chair Jeana Jacobs. Both will appear on the ballot for November's General Election. Two University of Maryland Baltimore County students will also be on the ballot: District 1's David Murray and District 8's Edward Burroughs III The Diamondback reported.
