Prince George's Cheerleaders Place at U.S. Finals

Teams from across the country competed recently in Virginia Beach, VA.

Middle and high school-aged cheerleaders from Prince George's County Public Schools were recognized at a national competition. PGCPS cheerleaders competed against others from across the country in different catergories—including Varsity, Junior Varsity (JV) Advanced, Varsity and JV Intermediate—at the U.S. Finals Cheerleading and Dance National Competition in Virginia Beach, VA. Winning PGCPS cheerleaders include: Walker Mill Middle School placed in the top ten nationally in their category. PGCPS cheerleaders ranked as the following in the U.S.:

80 People Attend Bike to Work Event

Many cyclists joined a convoy running from Greenbelt to DC.

Dozens of Prince George's County residents took two wheels to work Friday as part of Bike to Work Day, according to blogger Jeff Lemieux. Lemieux, who headed up a convoy of bikers from Greenbelt to DC, reported that 80 people visited a pit stop along the route and 30 bikers completed the ride. Open Tryouts This Weekend for Travel Boys Baseball Team

The tryouts will be held in Riverdale on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 6 p.m.

Experienced teen baseball players can try out for the Prince George’s County Baseball Alliance's summer league. The alliance will be holding tryouts this weekend starting Friday evening at 6 p.m. at at Riverdale Park Field #1 (5400 Haig Drive, Riverdale, MD, 20737) Teens should be ages 13 to 18, experienced and looking for more opportunities to play and hone their skills.  No cost is associated with the tryouts and reservations are not needed. POLL: Which Location Should Prince George's Co. Officials Pick for the New Casino?

Three companies submitted their bids Friday.

The Prince George's County commission tasked to determine which location would be best for a new casino will have to weigh three options after three companies placed bids for three different locations. County Executive Rushern L. Baker III recently told a Washington Business Journal reporter that he preferred MGM's plan at The National Harbor located in Oxon Hill on the Potomac. However, two other bidders—Greenwood Racing, Inc. and Penn National—have also pitched two other locations. Penn National would want their casino as the Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, while Greenwood Racing, Inc. picked an abandoned lot in Fort Washington. So what do you think? More helpful would be a chart showing causation. Who was at fault? What were the pedestrians wearing. So far, the approach appears to be a scattergun approach of blaming the drivers. Today alone I observed dozens of pedestrians cutting through moving traffic.   more ›

Report: Nearly 160 Apply for School Board's Open Seats

The applicants are vying for four open seats on Prince George's County Board of Education, county officials told The Washington Post.

Interest in being on the Prince George's County Board of Education has peaked since County Executive Rushern L. Baker III's legislation passed to expand the school board and appoint the chief of the school district. According to The Washington Post, about 160 people applied for the four open positions on the school board. Baker's education liaison, Christian Rhodes, told the Post that applicants vary from active parents, CEOs, university professors and civic leaders.
