Parts of University Park, Riverdale Park, Hyattsville, and College Park were briefly without power Monday morning.
At around 9:30 a.m. this morning, a large swath of University Park, and some areas of Riverdale Park, College Park and Hyattsville went unexpectedly dark. The outage was caused when a tree limb fell across all three phases near Underwood Street, according to Pepco spokesperson Marcus Beal. At the height of the outage, 423 customers were without power, and signals were dark at the intersection of U.S. Route 1 and East-West Highway. Riverdale Park police were on site directing traffic. Residents report that crews reached the scene quickly, and power was restored to most homes and businesses within the hour. Marylanders without power number 75,000 as Sandy picks up speed and intensity.
Hurricane Sandy is expected to make landfall between 8 and 10 p.m. Monday, Gov. Martin O’Malley said in a 5 p.m. press conference. Gov. Martin O’Malley urged Marylanders to stay inside for the next 36 hours and said the storm will take lives as it moves through Maryland.
Gov. Martin O’Malley said Marylanders will die as Hurricane Sandy moves through the state. “The days ahead are going to be very difficult,” he said in a press conference at Maryland Emergency Management Agency headquarters in Reisterstown Monday morning. “There will be people who will die and are killed in the storm.” He urged residents to stay off the roads and stay inside for the next 24 to 36 hours. Pepco is preemptively increasing the number of utility workers it is bringing in from across the country, as Hurricane Sandy continues to head north.
In the face of recent storm projections for Hurricane Sandy, Pepco has increased the size of its call for help with Maryland and Washington, DC. Originally, the power company asked utilities in the Southeast and Midwest to pitch in with an additional 2,500 line personnel and 400 tree personnel. The company has increased those requests to 3,000 and 600 more workers respectively. It is a preemptive move, as Pepco will wait for safe conditions before sending personnel out in the storm. Once the wind subsides, though, Pepco plans to dispatch them, said Bob Hainey, Pepco spokesman. "It's very dangerous and that's why we take a lot of safety precautions," Hainey said. Pepco warns that Hurricane Sandy could be a "potentially catastrophic event."
Pepco's pre-hurricane message to customers on Friday: Be prepared, and be patient. Hurricane Sandy—dubbed Frankenstorm—"has the potential to cause devastating damage to our service territory," Pepco warned. "[Tens] or even hundreds of thousands of customers could lose power during this potentially catastrophic event," and multi-day outages are a possibility, according to a Pepco statement. “We’re hearing forecasts that we could see heavy sustained winds for up to 48 hours as this storm makes an agonizingly slow track across our overall system,” Pepco President Thomas H. Both Pepco and Baltimore Gas and Electric are reporting a significant number of outages in the DC suburbs.
Utilities in the Washington, DC suburbs are reporting thousands of outages for customers in Montgomery and Prince George's Counties following thunderstorms and high winds throughout the region. Pepco is reporting 1,058 active outages throughout their coverage area, which includes Montgomery and Prince George's Counties and the District. In Montgomery, 15,441 customers are affected and 26,521 customers in Prince George's are affected. Baltimore Gas and Electric reports 1,650 customers in Prince George's out of power. A strong storm swept through Prince George's County Thursday afternoon affecting thousands of Pepco customers.
This story was updated at 6:34 p.m. More than 2,500 Pepco customers lost power because of an unexpected storm that hit the Prince George’s County area Thursday afternoon. According to Pepco’s outage map, nearly 2,000 of those customers are located in the Upper Marlboro area near Crane Highway. As of 6:30 p.m., a couple of hours after the storm swept through the county, 2,500 Prince George's Pepco customers were without power, according to a spokesperson. BGE’s website showed 25 people in the county without power at the same time. Bob Hainey, a spokesman for Pepco, told Patch four to five major power lines in the area were disrupted by the storm causing the outages. The increase will raise a household's monthly electricity bill by about $2, according to a statement issued by the Maryland Public Service Commission.
Of the $68 million rate increase requested by Pepco, the Maryland Public Service Commission has rejected $50 million. Still, the $18 million rate increase "translates into a $2.02 typical residential monthly bill impact" (a 1.69 percent increase), according to a statement issued by the Maryland Public Service Commission on Friday afternoon. In the rejection order, the commission "noted its overall dissatisfaction with Pepco’s performance, and characterized its request to increase returns to shareholders 'before Pepco corrects its sub-par performance' as 'backwards,' " according to the statement.
