With several inches of snow expected across the region between Tuesday night and Thursday morning, area residents are making preparations for the storm. 1. Rent Stabilization Tuesday’s College Park Mayor and Council work session agenda includes a review of a draft ordinance that would continue rent stabilization in College Park. The Prince George's Property Owners' Association has voiced objection to the rent stabilization law, which caps the amount that landlords in College Park can charge tenants of rental properties. One resident says he rarely goes to the College Park shopping center and plans to host fewer house parties because of parking restrictions and new meters.
Eighty-five percent of Patch polltakers said they hate the new parking meters installed at the College Park shopping center, because they're either too expensive or too confusing. One of those frustrated residents, Chris Tennant, shared his parking frustrations with Patch in a letter to the editor. He said he rarely visits the shopping center because of the meters, and he plans to host fewer house parties because of parking restrictions in Old Town. Some locals say they're shopping in Hyattsville now.
In what started as an online survey to learn where local shoppers are spending their money, residents are airing their grievances about parking in the city. The survey results won't be made public, but it's the comments that might shed the most light on what influences consumers when deciding where to shop now a days -- the new parking meters in downtown College Park. “I am not alone among my neighbors in boycotting College Park shopping center since they installed those money-hungry inconvenient parking meters,” wrote Michele Leonardi, referring to the credit card parking meters that replaced the coin meters this summer. “I find the new pay station at the shopping center so annoying. Parking enforcer said there appears to be fewer parking tickets issued.
Fewer parking tickets have been issued since new pay-by-space credit card stations replaced the coin meters at the College Park Shopping Center a month and a half ago, according to Jim Miller, the city's parking enforcement manager. Miller said he’s also noticed more people are paying for parking, though it’s still too early to have data to support either assessment. This is good news, Miller said, because he said an effective parking program in his mind leads to more compliance rather than more tickets. The people have never voted on acceptance of the shopping center parking fee setup, and it is rights violation and wrong way to raise money for unknown purposes. The small businesses and major companies, such as CVS should have fought against this kind of zoning violation. more ›
