12th Annual Azalea Classic Attracts Community, Promotes Healthy Living

After a tornado warning and an evening storm hitting University Park, community residents, volunteers and hundreds of parents and faculty came together on April 20, to participate in the 12th annual Azalea Classic 5K-1K-1 Mile run and walk.

Drawing hundreds of children, parents and community volunteers, the Alazea Classic promoted fitness and healthy living for the University Park community.  This year, children attending the University Park Elementary School were encouraged and prepared by faculty to train for the event. Physical education teacher Christy Neff integrated training for the run into the curriculum throughout the year in order to prepare her students for the race. "It's what makes this race unique," said director of the 2013 Azalea Classic Kristi Janzen. “The University Park Azalea Classic is a lot of fun. Smaller kids love to be outside and run around. Older kids and adults either enjoy the competition or just have a great time with their neighbors by getting …

NHS Choir Makes South Africa Trip Fundraising Goal

Choir boosters overcome challenges, raise money to make it to South Africa choir festival.

It looks like the Northwestern High School Choir will be going to South Africa after all, according to The Washington Post. Readers may remember Patch's coverage of the choir's fundraising efforts to make it the Ihlombe! South African Choral Festival. At the time, back in February, there was serious doubt as to whether or not the choir could raise the $100,000 necessary to pay for the trip. Since then, the story has gotten some press in a number of media outlets, including within Petula Dvorak's column for The Washington Post. Dvorak's column got the choir national attention, and soon after the post office was practically deluged by donations to help the group.  $70,000 in donations, to be exact. It's a whopping haul, especially when you …

Northwestern High Harlem Shake: Version Three

Okay. We get it, Wildcats. You like the Harlem Shake.

The kids at Northwestern really, really like the Harlem Shake meme. If that fact wasn't obvious after students produced not one, but two Harlem Shake videos, there is now a third Harlem Shake video from the Hyattsville high school which scales the meme to massive levels not previously seen locally.  Whereas previous Northwestern Harlem Shake videos featured small crowds of students, this one turns up the participation knob to 11, with hundreds of students taking part in the production which was shot in the school auditorium. A school administrator is even seen getting his freak on. (Readers: Who is that bearded dance master at the end?) So congrats, Northwestern High School. I didn't think I would end up writing this much about the Harlem …

Protest Punctuated With Chant, Shouts

About five members of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan. picketed outside Northwestern High School Tuesday morning.

More than 200 people showed up to exercise their First Amendment rights to protest at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville this morning. Five people from Topeka,Kan.—based Westboro Baptist Church, the group known for its anti-homosexual stance and for picketing at the funerals of soldiers, showed up at 9 a.m., waved signs, chanted and sang amended lyrics to songs by Lady Gaga and Ke$ha. “We’re happy to be here … to tell you some truth of God,” said Westboro protester Megan Phelps-Roper. “The definition of loving your neighbor is to warn them … that they are going to hell.” Phelps-Roper, 25, works at her family’s law firm and protests on her days off. “[It is] a big lie that’s told in this nation that God loves everyone,” she said.
