The event runs Tuesday night from 7-9 p.m.

On Tuesday, Aug. 7, College Park will join some 15,000 locations across the United States and Canada in marking National Night Out (NNO), an annual observance designed to increase awareness of crime prevention efforts. Launched in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch, NNO brings together residents, police, and other leaders at community events organized around the theme of public safety. This year, College Park's main event will be held at the College Park Aviation Museum (1985 Corporal Frank Scott Dr.) from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. In addition to local law enforcement, elected officials, and community leaders, the evening will feature free refreshments and a musical performance by a local soloist. About Town

Is National Night Out Effective?

It’s a great event, but is it achieving its goal of 'taking back the streets?'

Driving along MD Rt. 193 from College Park to Greenbelt, there is a billboard on the left side of the road advertising season tickets for the upcoming University of Maryland football season. It’s not like the season is going to “sneak up” on football fans — especially if their interest in Terps football has prompted them to become season ticket holders. Whenever I pass it, I wonder, just how effective is this ad? I wonder the same thing about National Night Out (NNO), the national event held each year on Aug. 2 that, according to organizers, is designed to: “heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; …

College Park Gears Up for Citywide and Neighborhood National Night Out Celebration

Community members are encouraged to mingle with neighbors and public safety representatives for the anti-crime and anti-drug event.

Community residents across the country on Tuesday will mingle with neighbors and public safety officials as part of a national crime and drug awareness event. But it’s especially important that citizens of College Park be proactive in getting to know their neighbors, according to Robert Boone of the Neighborhood Watch Committee, because the city doesn’t have its own police force. “Our effort this year was to bring everyone together,” Boone said. Tuesday, residents will be encouraged to socialize with their neighbors over refreshments and various activities. Members from the fire departments, county police and Emergency Medical Technicians will also be on hand to mingle with the community. “National Night Out is really an event with two …

Video: Striking Up the Band, Caribbean-Style

The Lakeland Youth Steel Band Orchestra made their concert debut at this year's National Night Out at the College Park Community Center. They learned the three songs they played that night in the four weeks leading up to the event. All of the band members are students at Paint Branch Elementary School, who had never played a steel drum. The Aug. 3 concert was the culmination of the lessons paid for by Lydia Laidlow, a teacher at the school and a Lakeland community resident. You can see them in action in the video and also get the full story on the Lakeland Steel Band Orchestra.
