D.C. Man Arrested in 'Gang-Related' College Park Shooting

Edwin Morales, 20, faces first- and second-degree murder charges.

Authorities say a Washington, D.C. man was arrested Friday and charged with fatally shooting 20-year-old David Esequel Avelar last month in College Park. According to Prince George's County police, Edwin Morales, 20, of the 3300 block of Monterey Ln. SE was taken into custody in northwest D.C. He faces first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and other related charges. On Feb. 24 at around 4 a.m., police responded to a report of a shooting in the 9100 block of Baltimore Ave. in College Park. When officers arrived, they found Avelar suffering from a gunshot wound. Police Investigate 'Gang-Related' Slaying in College Park

David Esequel Avelar, 20, of Lanham was gunned down early Sunday on Baltimore Ave.

From the Prince George's County Police Department: The Prince George’s County Police Department is investigating a murder in College Park. The victim is identified as 20 year-old David Esequel Avelar of the 6600 block of 94th Avenue in Lanham. On Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at approximately 4:00 am, patrol officers were called to the 9100 block of Baltimore Avenue for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, patrol officers found Avelar suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Avelar was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Man Pleads Guilty to 1990 Berwyn Heights Murder

Thomas Lee Posey, 57, also admitted to two rapes from the same period, officials said.

A 57-year-old man has admitted to killing a Beltsville woman nearly 23 years after the crime occurred, according to Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks. Thomas Lee Posey pled guilty to first-degree murder and two counts of first-degree rape dating to 1990. He was sentenced to life in prison after entering the plea before Prince George’s County Circuit Judge Albert Northrop. According to a statement from Alsobrooks, Posey raped and murdered 22-year-old Margaret Perkins in June of 1990 while she was on a jog through a Berwyn Heights park. The Beltsville resident's body was later found by a group of firefighters playing softball. She showed signs of strangulation, Alsobrooks said. According to a Washington Post story …

Former Policeman Found Guilty of Murder in Deaths of Woman and Child in Pr. George's

A former officer shot his mistress in the head and drove their baby daughter to an apartment complex where he left her in a hot car to die, according to prosecutors.

A former Washington DC police officer was found guilty of two counts of first degree murder on Thursday in the 2011 deaths of the mother of his child and of their 11-month old daughter  in Prince George's County, prosecutors said in a news release. Richmond Diallo Phillips, 40, killed Wynetta Wright, 20, and their daughter Jaylin to avoid paying child support argued Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks, The Washinton Times reported. It took a jury less than two hours of deliberation to convict Phillips. He is scheduled to be sentenced March 22 and faces double life without parole plus 20 years, prosecutors stated.  Phillips lured Wright—described as his mistress by prosectors—to the Hillcrest Heights Community Center …

A two-year zero-homicide streak for Arlington County, VA, ended last week and police are asking Montgomery and Prince George's county residents for help in locating the killer of jewelry store owner during business hours on a busy street. Police say 52-year-old Tommy Wong was killed during an armed robbery of his Columbia Pike jewelry store, Capital Jewelers, and his killer remains at large. Two Teens Arrested in Bladensburg Beating Death

The suspects, 16 and 17 years old, face charges of first-degree murder and robbery.

Prince George's County police have arrested two Hyattsville-area teenagers in the killing of a 54-year-old man in Bladensburg over the weekend.  At approximately 11 p.m. Saturday, Bladensburg police officers responded to the 5200 block of Newton Street on a report of "disorderly individuals drinking and chasing each other with a shovel." When units arrived, authorities said, they found a man dead on the side of the road. Police have identified the victim as David Krupski, a resident of nearby Newton Street. Krupski's body was found within a few hundred yards of his house, according to police. Beltsville Man Charged in Berwyn Heights Killing

Andrew Heinz Kugler, 36, was arrested Monday morning in College Park.

A 36-year-old Beltsville man was charged Monday in the killing of his ex-girlfriend in Berwyn Heights over the weekend, Prince George's County police said. Andrew Heinz Kugler faces a charge of second degree murder in the death of Amber Danielle Schinault, 36. He was being held without bond. Acccording to police, patrol officers responded Sunday afternoon to Schinault's home in the 8600 block of 57th Avenue, where they found her with lacerations to her neck. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Around 9:30 a.m. Monday, officers reportedly observed Kugler near Calvert Road and Bowdoin Street in College Park, where they placed him under arrest.
