Historic photographs bring back the days when Prince George's Plaza was an open air mall.
If you've walked through a the Mall at Prince George's, you've probably had to deal with one particular architectural annoyance unique to the shopping center: the vertical support columns which line the main hall. For an unaware shopper, the columns can become an unwelcome surprise if you happen to walk into one while distracted by conversation or an idle glance at your smartphone. But it wasn't always this way. When the mall first opened in 1959 as Prince George's Plaza, shoppers had a lot more room to maneuver because the mall didn't have a roof. With retailers vying for your holiday dollars, stores and malls are pulling out all the stops to lure you into their establishments for Black Friday. So what can you expect from local businesses and malls, if you decide to brave the crowds on one of the busiest shopping days of the year? Twenty Prince George's County students received American Express gift certificates, with four lucky students getting free roundtrip airline tickets, under the Scholar Dollar Family Program to honor academic achievement.
In an effort to embrace student achievement in Prince George's County, the county executive's office and the Prince George's County Public Schools rewarded several students today for their academic excellence through the Scholar Dollar Family Program. The ceremony, which took place at The Mall at Prince George's, awarded several students who earned a 3.0 GPA, made honor roll, or achieved some other significant status with special discounts, incentives and prizes. In addition to American Express gift certificates, four of the 20 students received a grand prize of four round-trip tickets each from Southwest Airlines. I went to Walmart in Landover Hills on Thursday night to pick up three bikes on sale for my grandchildren. There was a small line when I got there, gradually got larger, but I was in and out in under 30 minutes.
