By David Gutman, Capital News Service Maryland Rep. Donna Edwards, in a brief speech at the Democratic convention that drew deeply on her personal history, made a case for President Barack Obama, citing his reforms in education and health care. "I'm a first-generation graduate from Wake Forest University," Edwards said, playing to the North Carolina crowd. "My parents paid for my education on a patchwork of grants, loans and savings. It's the same way we financed my son's college education 25 years later." Edwards, who represents Maryland's 4th Congressional District, then credited Obama with making what she called, "the single largest investment in higher education ever." The Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act, an addendum to …

By Sarah Hogue Capital News Service The road to re-election for Rep. Donna Edwards cleared Wednesday with the withdrawal of Glenn Ivey, her chief rival in the 4th Congressional District Democratic primary. Ivey, the former Prince George's County state's attorney, said he was quitting the race because he was unable to raise enough money to get his message out, particularly since the primary during a presidential election year is pushed up from September to April. "Since this was going to be a short timeline," Ivey said, "you couldn't do your typical canvassing." Plus, he said, "A lot of my previous donors in Prince George's County have been hammered by the real estate collapse." Edwards could not be reached for comment. Ivey, of Cheverly…

James Benoit has formed an exploratory bid. Two other candidates have filed with the state to be in the Democratic primary April 3, George McDermott of Forest Heights and Ian Garner of Suitland. No Republicans have filed. The race is a hot one because the district was changed to include part of Anne Arundel County and eliminate a section of Montgomery County …

Not every single parent is a dumb teenager that skips school and expects everyone else to support them. Everyday people go through tough times and with prayer, faith, emotional and maybe material help, they get past it…   more ›
