Notes from the Jan. 17 council work session.
Couldn’t make last night’s mayor and city council meeting? Here’s a review of what the council and mayor discussed during their January work session. Cafrtiz Development Update City Manager Joseph Nagro informed the mayor and council that the next Prince George’s County Planning Board hearing on the Cafritz property rezoning will be held on February 2 at 10 a.m. The Planning Board recessed last Thursday after seven hours of testimony to give the commissioners time to review the conditions and comments. Only spike in turnout in recent history occurred when two University of Maryland students took on an incumbent and future mayor.

The average voter turnout for uncontested district races over the past six elections was 6 percent. Candidates in Districts 2 and 4 will be unchallenged on Nov. 8, Election Day. The College Park City Council unanimously voted to approve the city's new strategic plan.
The College Park City Council unanimously voted to approve the strategic plan for 2010-15 as well as the strategic action plan for fiscal year 2011 at Tuesday night's city council meeting. Both plans were designed to improve College Park in key areas, by revitalizing the Route 1 area, encouraging green development and fostering community building efforts. The approval of the strategic plans was the product of more than a year's worth of work and required the expertise of a consultant who helped the council and community formulate a plan that was both practical and consistent with the goals that the city hopes to achieve. Denise Hinden, president of Managance Consulting, the firm enlisted to help draft the plan, said working with a city …
