Austin Grill Express Closes After 4 Months of Operation at Varsity

Representatives of the restaurant chain won't reply to interview requests, but city officials say a new management direction and poor patronage might have been factors in the closure.

Austin Grill Express, the Tex-Mex chain restaurant on the ground floor of the student housing tower The Varsity, closed after just four months of serving burritos, tacos and other fare, though the exact reason is unclear. College Park’s Economic Development Coordinator Michael Stiefvater said that management has begun reigning in the Express chains, an offshoot of Austin Grill, which offers a limited menu. Express locations have also recently closed in Rockville and Annapolis. But there could have been more factors at play, Stiefvater said in an email. “Their closing was likely due to a combination between an internal issue and less patronage than anticipated,” Stiefvater said. College Park City Councilman Bob Catlin, whose District 2 …

"Express locations have also recently closed in Rockville and Annapolis." incorrect -- the rockville and annapolis locations that closed were full-service austin grills, not AG express outlets.   more ›

Readers' Choice: Fishnet Catches a Win for Best Fries

It was a close race between two new-ish eateries in College Park, but Fishnet pulled away from Bobby's Burger Palace.

Apparently, Fishnet isn’t just a place to catch good fish, but some stellar French fries, too. The Berwyn restaurant won this week’s Readers’ Choice poll for best fries in College Park, but the joint didn’t glide to its victory. For a week, the establishment was in a neck-and-neck flip-flop race with another eatery new to the city: Bobby’s Burger Palace. It was a late Thursday-Friday surge in the poll, and a 5-star rating in the Patch directory, that pushed Fishnet to the win. Having just opened this fall, owner Ferhat Yalcin has already generated a lot of attention for his quaint restaurant on 5010 Berwyn Road. The Gazette reported this week that the Restaurant Association of Maryland nominated Fishnet as one of its top favorite new …

Having just returned from vacation in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, my husband and I are still in great seafood mode. We more than satisfied our taste for both lobster and crab, on the menu last night at FishNet. Keyia is so helpful and personable, that we would return simply for the opportunity to chat with this lovely new personality on the College Park scene. Don't wait as long as we did to get your…   more ›

Hi Monica, He will be there for at least a little while after the ribbon cutting -- there's a media event going on between the end of the ribbon ceremony and the official opening at noon. I'm not sure how long he'll be there after noon though. I'd give it a try though, if I were you!   more ›
