Many cyclists joined a convoy running from Greenbelt to DC.
Dozens of Prince George's County residents took two wheels to work Friday as part of Bike to Work Day, according to blogger Jeff Lemieux. Lemieux, who headed up a convoy of bikers from Greenbelt to DC, reported that 80 people visited a pit stop along the route and 30 bikers completed the ride. A DC-bound convoy will come through College Park around 7:30 a.m.
Bike commuters stopped by City Hall on Friday for bagels, coffee, a tune-up and a T-shirt.
Not a car was parked on the west edge of the City Hall lot on Friday morning. Instead, the area bustled with cyclists, enjoying breakfast from Bagel Place and MOM's Organic Market, and tune-up services provided by REI in College Park. It was College Park's pit stop for national Bike to Work Day. Senior Planner Elisa Vitale said that 124 cyclists had registered ahead of time to visit City Hall along their bike commute to work. College Park was one of 58 pits stops in the region planned for national Bike to Work Day, sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists. Bike thefts, high ridership contributed to decision to make College Park Metro station the first for Bike & Ride facility.
Metro officially unveiled its first enclosed, card-accessible Bike & Ride storage facility on Tuesday morning at the College Park-University of Maryland station, a win for bicycle and public transit commuters.
