Fishnet to Open Coffee Shop Later This Year

Owner Ferhat Yalcin says shop will serve lattes, cappuccinos

Fishnet—known for its fresh seafood and tasty fries—is set to open a coffee shop next door later this year, according to owner Ferhat Yalcin. Yalcin says the café will occupy the approximately 800-square-foot space next to the restaurant, located at 5010 Berwyn Rd. The coffee shop is the brainchild of Yalcin, who saw a business opportunity for a locally-owned coffee shop in College Park.  As of now, he says, the only options are larger chains like Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts, which are an inconvenient drive from Berwyn. “There’s no coffee shop around here,” he said.  “And there are no independent coffee shops, either.” Others have doubts about a coffee shop located blocks away from downtown College Park, questioning whether a new café …

Young Continues as President of Berwyn District Civic Association

Members of the BDCA discussed concerns for the upcoming year.

Kevin Young listened to residents discuss racing bicycles, strict (but effective) speed cameras and tall hedges. He made notes on whom to call to solve those issues, and then was  re-elected as president of the Berwyn District Civic Association Thursday night. “People seem to listen to you,” District 2 Councilman Jack Perry said at one point during the meeting. Nine officers were elected Thursday, but the slate was determined ahead of time and there was no competition. This year, the association will be focusing on revitalizing the Berwyn commercial district, keeping an eye on what becomes of land around the Greenbelt Metro Station and developing bonds between neighbors, Young said.  It will also closely watch changes in district lines, …
