Terp Basketball Game Could Cause Rt. 1 Backup

The Terps are taking on Florida State.

The Terps are taking on the Florida State Seminoles Wednesday night in an ACC basketball matchup and that could mean some dicey traffic on Rt. 1. The game starts at 8 p.m., but the university alert systems warns that heavy traffic can be expected from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

26 Years Ago Today: Len Bias Dies

The 22-year-old UMd. basketball star overdosed on cocaine just two days after being drafted to the NBA.

Twenty-six years ago today—on June 19, 1986—University of Maryland basketball phenom Leonard Kevin "Len" Bias died of a cocaine overdose. He was 22. A native of Landover, Maryland and graduate of Northwestern High School, Bias set the college basketball world ablaze at UMd. He was twice named an All-American player and tallied a career 2,149 points, then a school record. On June 17, 1986, Bias was selected as the second overall pick in the NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics. Just two days later, emergency responders were called to his dorm room when Bias was unresponsive after taking cocaine. He was transported to Leland Memorial Hospital in Riverdale and pronounced dead two hours later. UPDATED: Maryland Beats Louisville to Advance to Sweet 16

UMd. women's basketball team beat Louisville Monday night 72-68.

Updated 9:17 p.m. The Terps beat Louisville 72-68 Monday evening to advance to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Championships, according to the Maryland Terrapins Facebook page. Original Story No. 2-seeded Maryland women's basketball team will battle No. 7 Louisville at 7 p.m. Monday at the Comcast Center in the NCAA second round. The winner of tonight's game moves on to Sunday's Regional Semifinal in Raleigh, N.C. In the Terps' 59-44 win over No. 15 Navy on Saturday, sophomore Alyssa Thomas had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and broke the 1,000-point plateau. Sophomore Laurin Mincy had 14 points. Lady Terps Win ACC Championship

The University of Maryland women's basketball team beat Georgia Tech 68-65 on Sunday for the ACC Title.

Congrats to the University of Maryland women's basketball team, who over the weekend beat Georgia Tech 68-65 for its 10th Atlantic Coast Conference Championship title. It's the team's second in four years. Sophomore Alyssa Thomas was named ACC Tournament MVP, having scored 29 points. Get a full game recap here. The Terps beat Virginia 70-58 and Wake Forest 73-58 en route to the championship title game on Sunday in Greensboro, N.C. Maryland hosts the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament at the Comcast Center on March 17 and 19. Find ticket information here.

College Park Readies for Duke Game

Police working to maintain order among students, who could be energized from Duke game and Gary Williams' visit.

College Park will be full of energy today, and may be long into the night. Yes, today is the day that students flood back into classrooms at the University of Maryland, but tonight is also the night that the Duke University basketball team comes to College Park. Police and city officials say they’ve taken measures to prevent any post-game activity from getting out of hand, like it did two years ago. After the University of Maryland beat Duke in College Park in 2010, Terp fans flooded the street and rioted.
