Maryland General Assembly Notebook 2013

Miller Gets His Bust

A state senator wants a new state bird; one man's technolgical fortress is his castle; and the Senate president feels snubbed by Obama.

It's not a statue in front of the office building that bares his name but Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller did receive a bust of himself this week courtesy of the Regional Manufacturing Institute. Sen. Kathy Klausmeier, a Perry Hall Democrat, gave a sneak preview of the small, light-weight bust of Miller moments before presenting it to the Senate's top dog. "You can't have too much Mike Miller," Klausmeier said. The technology is similar to what was used in a scene of Jurassic Park 3 where a copy of a velociraptor's larynx was recreated. The institute offered legislators in Annapolis the opportunity to have themselves scanned into a computer and get busts of themselves. Miller seemed impressed with the petite bust but joked that it …

Two Former Terps to Play in Superbowl

Vernon Davis of the San Francisco 49ers and Torrey Smith of the Ravens are both Maryland football alums.

Maryland Terrapin football fans have something extra to cheer about in Sunday's Super Bowl—two former University of Maryland football players will be facing each other on the field. Vernon Davis, who played for UMD under former head coach Ralph Friedgen from 2003-2006, was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the 2006 draft, where he continues to play as tight end. Should Redskins Fans Back the Ravens in the Super Bowl?

At least one Washington Post writer thinks so.

As the Ravens prepare to face the 49ers in Sunday's Super Bowl—and with the Redskins having long since begun their own off-season—Washington fans are once again faced with a conundrum: should they back Baltimore? It's a question many Washingtonians confronted in recent seasons as the Ravens racked up four playoff appearances to the Redskins' none. But with the arrival of rookie sensation Robert Griffin III and the team's first signs of postseason life since 2007, has the calculus changed? For one Washington Post writer, the answer is still simple: Hail to the Ravens.  Craig Timberg, an admitted Baltimore fan, says it's a no-brainer given the Ravens' many parallels to the Lombardi-winning Redskins clubs of yore: a stout defense, a great …

Would You Pay $315,916 to See the Ravens Play in Super Bowl XLVII?

Third-party tickets range from $2,000 up to six-figures for the big game.

Die-hard Ravens fans will do a lot to show their support for their team. But would they pay almost $316,000 to see them battle the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl XLVII at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans? Doug Gardner, of Parkton, has been a fan of the Ravens "since day one" and showed his support for the team by wearing his Ray Rice jersey on top of his business clothes. "I even kept it on for client meetings, including some I was meeting for the first time," he said. When asked about the high third-party ticket prices, Gardner said he'd pay "maybe $1,000" to go to the Super Bowl. While tickets for the Super Bowl are always more expensive than regular season or even playoff games, the StubHub website currently lists nearly …
