After the original National Archives Building, built in 1935 in Washington D.C., reached its capacity in 1970, records were stored in rented space in Suitland, MD, until official support for a new archives site was eventually obtained in 1985. Land for the new facility was donated by the University of Maryland in 1988, but it wasn't until 1994 that the building was considered "substantially complete."
Today, Archives II is the largest archives building in the world, and is home to everything from architectural drawings to the official records of the Nixon administration.
