The department looks to hire 50 new firefighters, and waded through 3,000 applications to determine 2,300 of them met minimum requirements.
Hiring a new employee can be a daunting task. Think about how overwhelming it is to receive so many applications that it's 600 times the number of open positions. The Prince George's County Fire/Emergency Medical Services Department faces this very task. While its fiscal year 2013 budget includes 50 new positions for firefighters, the department received 3,000 applications for the jobs. Out of that pool, 2,300 applicants meet the minimum qualifications and were invited to participate in the written examination. In comparison, in 2011, nearly 2,100 applications were received and 1,675 were eligible to take the written test. A press release from the department suggests several theories for the number of applications: difficulty in finding …

With Pimlico triumph, I'll Have Another keeps Triple Crown dream alive.
I’ll Have Another proved the skeptics wrong by winning the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday in exactly the same way he won the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago. The Kentucky-bred chestnut colt chased down pre-race favorite Bodemeister in the stretch crossing the finish line first by a neck. In the process, I'll Have Another kept alive hopes for horse racing’s first Triple Crown champion in more than three decades. “More than anything, I’m glad I didn’t disappoint people,” said Mario Gutierrez, I’ll Have Another’s jockey. “Like I say, it’s not about me. It is about the horse. From day one, I’ve believed in him. I’m so happy for him because he’s just a great horse.” Affirmed, in 1978, was the last colt to capture the …
We know you're proud of your Terp graduates. Show it by sharing their photos on Patch!
On Sunday afternoon, University of Maryland students will strut across the Comcast Center stage, proudly receiving their diplomas. We know that, as their friends and family, you are proud of them, too. There are ways to show it... with flowers and balloons, perhaps. And of course, a little cold, hard cash in a card is always appreciated. But why not make a public statement, and tell the world about your graduate's stellar accomplishments by sharing a photo on Patch? Here's how:
Roads around joint service base could be more congested over the weekend.
Prince George's County officials are telling motorists to expect significant delays on the roads near Joint Base Andrews over the weekend. It's because of the expected high traffic resulting from the Joint Service Open House and Air Show on Saturday May 19 and Sunday, May 20. "Be aware and plan ahead for your travel," reads a notice sent out to residents earlier today. The open house and air show runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. If you are looking to avoid traffic to get to the air show, try Metro, which will be running a shuttle back and forth from the Branch Avenue Metro Station on the Green Line. However, inbound shuttle buses will only run until 1 p.m.
Test your visual knowledge of the city ... err, the area near it.
Every weekend, Patch tests your familiarity with College Park by posting a photo that was taken from somewhere in the city. It's your job to guess where the picture was shot. Type your guesses in the comment section below, and we'll reveal the answer next week. Today, we're being a little tricky. The picture was taken just outside of the municipal boundary, but not far. Do you have a photo that would work well for So You Think You Know College Park? Email it to Shannon.Hoffman@Patch.com for the chance to see it on Patch.

The surprise success of the Orioles and Nationals has the region buzzing.
The Orioles and Nationals "rivalry" has required quotations through the first few years of interleague play around the beltway. This year is different. Entering the three-game weekend set, beginning Friday night at Nationals Park, the two clubs are battling atop their divisions against clubs with star-studded rosters and larger payrolls. So as one of the most important series between these neighboring ball clubs gets underway, the Patch sites in the Maryland area are curious: who are you pulling for in this year's Battle of the Beltway? Are you cheering for Bryce Harper and the Nationals? Or are you behind Adam Jones and the Orioles? While we're at it, which team do you think stands the best chance of staying in the pennant race late into …

Ruling stems from divorce case filed by a couple married in California in 2008.
UPDATED (5:12 p.m.)—Same-sex marriages legally performed out of state must be recognized by Maryland Courts, according to a decision issued Friday by Maryland’s highest court. “Maryland courts will withhold recognition of a valid foreign marriage only if that marriage is ‘repugnant’ to State public policy,” wrote Court of Appeals Judge Glenn Harrell Jr. in the 7-0 decision. Legal experts and Maryland Attorney General Douglas Gansler said the decision has both immediate and long-term effects—even as the state moves toward a possible referendum on the recently passed law allowing same-sex marriage in the state. Gansler, who in 2010 issued what he called “a forecast” opinion predicting the court would ultimately recognize out-of-state same-…
