This Week in Sports

Roosevelt, Parkdale and Northwestern are still figuring out exactly what they have as far as basketball talent.

Winter high school sports seasons are still young. At this point, that is a good thing, as it's unclear where any of the College Park area teams stand. While Roosevelt's superiority was as clear-cut as Parkdale and Northwestern's inferiority seven days ago, the waters appeared to have muddied this week with unexpected wins and losses across the board.

Eleanor Roosevelt
The Raiders went 1-2 this week, bringing their overall record to 2-3. Although they remain highly ranked by the Washington Post, that may soon change. Roosevelt , but then , followed by a .

It's hard to know exactly what to expect from this team, as no clear trends are emerging. At times they control their turnovers, but often they can't. Leading scorer Prince Okoroh also had a shaky week, dumping in 26 points against High Point, but managing just two against Bishop McNamara.

The Lady Raiders went 1-1 this week, beating High Point but losing to Wise. Although they picked up their first loss of the year, point guard in the 4A division.

Parkdale
Last week it seemed the Panthers were destined for doom this season. Two unexpected victories this week though, the first over DuVal and the second at Northwestern, have the rest of the league buzzing about what might be brewing in Riverdale. It certainly can't hurt that they currently have five players averaging double-figure scoring.

Northwestern
The Wildcats were last week's undefeated team, starting the season 2-0. This week, things could not have been more different. They lost by 45 points (94-49) to Suitland on Tuesday, and then were downed by Parkdale by 15 three days later. Don't miss Emma Patti's photo gallery of the latter.

The good news for Northwestern seems to be the play of point guard Jalen Prince, who is apparently adjusting well to his new role, a job he was forced to take on when last year's starting point guard and leading scorer Toure Sommerville was expelled.

Things are equally as interesting for the Northwestern girls, who this week were given a new coach in Rod Hairston. Hairston is as accomplished as they come, having won five straight state championships while coaching Roosevelt from 2005-2009. However, the plot thickens. Center Simone Sampson and guard Tiffany Wallace, are currently refusing to play for Hairston, in apparent protest of the year-long suspension (see firing) of coach Eric Sampson, Simone's father.

Despite the drama on Adelphi, the girls did pull out a win this week over Parkdale, and seem encouraged by the play of starting point guard Ebonie Diggs

Looking Ahead
Next week will be abbreviated by the beginning of the high school winter break. Before that hits though, the Roosevelt boys will look to get back on track against DuVal, Parkdale will host Oxon Hill and Northwestern will travel to Bladensburg.
