Roosevelt Volleyball Team Drops Close Match to Flowers
The Raiders couldn't fight off Flowers on Tuesday.
It was a close game for Charles H. Flowers High School and Roosevelt High School's varsity volleyball teams Tuesday night, but Flowers, who came into the night's game with a record of 10-1, continued its winning season and claimed victory, winning three of four total games in the match.
In the first game, Flowers, the home team Tuesday, kicked off the night with a narrow lead that it continued to build upon throughout the game, eventually winning by a score of 25-20.
Game two, however, ended much differently. The Roosevelt Raiders dominated the second set, winning with a 10-point margin. Although the Raiders' record did not quite replicate that of the dominant Flowers team, the team did come into the match with seven wins to two losses under its belt and showed its hustle through teamwork and impressive serves.

"Julie Hidgens is their captain and probably best player, and we couldn't adjust to her serving," said Flowers Coach Jeff Ware. "We just didn't adjust to whether she was shooting long or whether she was shooting short."
Roosevelt Coach Eileen Lloyd, however, said she felt that her team has "better servers than we were today," and that this was reflected in the remaining games.

In games three and four, neither side managed to run away with a lead, as power shifted by one-point margins between teams, and tied scores were constantly displayed on the scoreboard. The third game resulted in another win by Flowers, with a score of 25-22, which allowed the home team to gain control of the match.
Tension also reigned high in the fourth game, in which both teams remained competitive and actually found themselves tied at 25 apiece, before Flowers gained the two point lead to take the match. The final score was 27-25.
In the end, however, neither team felt completely satisfied with the level of play on display that night.
"I just feel like we were flat, like we never really had the momentum," Lloyd said.
Ware, on the other hand, said that although "the girls have played with a lot of fortitude, [they did] not in this game."
