Former UMd. Football Star Heads to NFL Playoffs With 49ers

Vernon Davis made history Saturday when he caught a pass that will take the San Francisco 49ers to the N.F.C. championship game.

Unlike other players on the San Francisco 49ers, former Terp football star Vernon Davis had a lot riding on the game against the New Orleans Saints Saturday.

He was fighting against history, The New York Times reported Davis saying“History was going through my mind. It was us against history. I said to myself, ‘It’s us against “no” and us against “can’t.” ’ All those things.”

What Davis is referring to and what many football fans associate him with is the 2008 rant of the then 49ers coach Mike Singletary, who sent Davis back to the locker room early, when he didn't play the game the way Singletary expected.

Singletary told the press in October 2008 that he would rather be penalized for playing with 10 players, than to play with one who didn't think about the team.

But, Davis proved Singletary wrong Saturday, when he made the final touchdown that took the 49ers to their 36-32 lead over the Saints. His dedication and teamwork will keep him in NFL history as the one who made "The Grab."
