A Sport for All

It's May already. The time of year when birds are chirping, flowers are blooming and moms everywhere are wondering what the heck they are going to do with the kids this summer.

Never fear. I'm on a mission to help you through this trying time. A few weeks ago I wrote about , a treasure hunting game that happens to be a perfect pastime for families. This week I bring you orienteering.

Orienteering is a sport in which participants use a map and compass to navigate a course while checking in at different posts along the way. In England the sport's motto is “A Sport for All.” After doing a little research, I believe this is true. 

While some see the sport as an opportunity to hone racing skills, I see it as an opportunity for my family to enjoy a day in the great outdoors while teaching our children how to read a map and use a compass. In other words, a sneaky way of making sure they get some exercise and are exhausted enough to sleep soundly through the night.

Quantico Orienteering Club organizes events almost every weekend of the year. 

This week's event will be held on Sunday, May 15 at the University of Maryland.  This event offers newcomers the opportunity to learn more about the sport before attempting one of the more challenging courses.

In addition to organizing events, the Quantico Orienteering Club is committed to helping new participants improve their skills. Their website is a great place to start planning your first event. It also offers tips and hints on completing the course while staying safe in the process.

In summers past, my family has relied on the old standbys – our local parks, the neighborhood pool and trips into D.C. to visit the Air & Space Museum once again.  This year, I am committed to trying a new approach. I am committed to trying new sports, setting out on new adventures and sharing the newest and most interesting among them with my readers.
