Whiz Kid: Joel Olujide

Joel was selected as one of just 11 finalists for his "If I were Mayor, I would..." essay.

Name: Joel Olujide

Age: 10

Grade: 4th

School: Berwyn Christian School 

Accomplishment: Joel was one of 11 Maryland 4th graders selected as finalists for the Maryland Municipal League's 11th Annual "If I were Mayor, I would..." essay contest.

Joel and his fellow finalists will be recognized by Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown, receive a Governor’s Citation, an award plaque and $100 at a public ceremony at the Maryland State House. 

Key to Awesomeness: Joel, who hopes someday to become a zoologist, incorporated his love of nature into his winning essay.

“I thought about volunteers working together to make a city beautiful,” he said in a recent interview. His essay focuses on planting more flowers and trees around the city, as well as strengthening the area's cultural events calendar. The essay is posted as a PDF at right. 

Joel said he doesn't harbor any real-life aspirations to become mayor. Rather, he spends his time studying his favorite subject, science, watching birds from the window of his family's car and playing with his two brothers.

Joel's older brother, Joshua, was also a finalist in the same contest last year.
