Weekend Terp Action (Basketball, Yes. But There's More.)

Not doing anything this weekend? Try making plans around the Maryland athletic schedule.

Most people in College Park know that the women's basketball team will compete in Raleigh this Sunday, in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament, but other University of Maryland athletic teams will play this weekend, too.

Here's a schedule of athletic events for the weekend and summaries of the teams' recent competitions:

Women's Basketball

Having reached the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament, the No. 2 seeded Terps will battle No. 3 Texas A&M at the PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C. at noon on Sunday. This is the first ever meeting between the two teams. The winner will face either No. 1 Notre Dame or No. 5 St. Bonaventure in Monday night's Regional Final in Raleigh.

  • Fun Fact: This is coach Brenda Frese's eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament in her 10 years coaching at Maryland. On Thursday, she was named a WBCA Regional Coach of the Year for Region 2.
  • On Monday, Maryland beat No. 7 Louisville, 72-68, in College Park in the second round of the tournament.

Women's Acrobatics and Tumbling

The Terps will compete at Baylor in Waco, TX.

  • Last Saturday, the women competed in Rome, GA, walking away with two wins against Fairmont State and Quinnipiac, and a loss against Oregon.

Baseball

Maryland will face Miami (17-4 overall, 5-1 in the ACC) today, Saturday and Sunday at Alex Rodriguez Park in Coral Gables, FL. First pitch today is scheduled for 7 p.m.

  • Last Wednesday, the Terps fell to Delaware 3-1. The team is 15-7 overall and 1-5 in the conference, with the only ACC win so far against No. 4 North Carolina on Sunday.

Women's Golf

The team is scheduled to compete at the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate in Stockbridge, VA on Monday and Tuesday.

  • On Tuesday, three Terps finished in the top 25 to lead the Maryland women's golf team to second place at the Pinehurst Challenge at Pinehurst. The team finished second among 16 teams. Freshman Juliet Vongphoumy tied for the fourth-lowest round of the day. Get results here.

Men's Golf

The Terps will spend Sunday through Tuesday at The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in Charleston, S.C.

  • Two weekends ago, the Terps competed at the General Hackler Championship in at DeBordieu Club in Pawleys Island, SC. The Terps scored a 907 (71-75-77) to finish 11th of 15 teams. Sophomore Sean Bosdosh and freshman Ben Warnquist finished in a tie for 21st place. Complete results are available here.

Women's Gymnastics

The team will compete in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championships in Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh, PA at 2 p.m. Saturday.

  • Last Saturday, the women competed against Penn State in University Park, PA, losing 195.550 - 196.500, though setting a season high total. The Terps' 195.500 is tied for the 23rd-highest score all-time. The Terps had three athletes finish in the top five in vault: Ally Krikorian's, Katy Dodds and Kyra Phillips. On Monday, 11 members were named to the EAGL All-Academic Team.

Women's Lacrosse

The No. 4 team will battle James Madison, 4-3 overall, at 4 p.m. Saturday at Harrisonburg, VA.

  • On Tuesday, the Terps beat Stony Brook 21-7, bringing their season record to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the ACC. Alex Aust had a career-high five goals, and Katie Schwarzmann earned a third straight hat trick.

Men's Lacrosse

The No. 7 ranked men's team will play No. 14 ranked University of North Carolina at noon Saturday at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, NC.

  • Last weekend, the Terps beat No. 10 Villanova 11-5, when Terp goalie Niko Amato made 12 saves and picked up six groundballs. Owen Blye, Billy Gribbin, Michael Shakespeare and Jesse Bernhardt had productive days, as well. It was the Terps' fifth win of the season, having only lost to University of Maryland, Baltimore County earlier this month.

Softball

The women open ACC play against UNC, 22-8, at 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday and at 1 p.m. Sunday in at Anderson Softball Stadium at Chapel Hill, NC.

  • On Wednesday, the team dropped two games against Florida Gulf Coach in Fort Myers, FL, 3-1 and 9-1.

Women's Tennis

The team was slated to play Georgia Tech at 1 p.m. Friday at home at the Cole Field House Tennis Courts in Charlottesville, VA. They'll host Clemson at 11 a.m. Sunday. Both are ACC matches.

  • Last weekend, the Terps fell to Virginia 4-3 at the Synder Tennis Center.  Cristina Stancu beat No. 15 Emily Fraser in straight sets and Ana Belzunce and Welma Luus beat No. 16 Emily Fraser and Li Xi in doubles action.

Men's Tennis

The men's tennis team travels this weekend to play Clemson at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. The team will play at Georgia Tech in Atlanta at noon on Sunday. Both are ACC matches.

  • On Sunday, the team lost at home against Oklamhoma 5-2. The previous Friday, the men won at Boston College 6-1, in their first conference win. The Terps are 4-9 overall and 1-2 in the ACC.

Men's and Women's Track and Field

The track and field teams will open the outdoor season today, competing against 28 teams at the UCF (University of Central Florida) Invitational in Orlando this weekend. Field events beginning at noon on Friday, and Saturday's schedule starting at 9 a.m.

Women's Water Polo

The team will face Pacific at 3 p.m. ET Saturday and Santa Clara at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Stockton, CA, for the UOP Invitational.
