Fundraising Deadline Extended for UMd. Swimming and Diving Teams

The administration has given the teams a set of fundraising benchmarks to give them a better opportunity to save their programs.

UMd. administration has decided to give the men's and women's swimming and diving programs more time to raise the $11.6 million dollars required to save their teams, according to a story in the Diamondback.

 at the end of this academic year to help balance the UMd. athletic department's budget.

Each program up for elimination was given the opportunity to  if they were able to raise the money required to fund their teams for the next eight years.

A new compromise sets fundraising benchmarks to give the teams a better opportunity to raise the money need to save their programs, the Diamondback reported. According to a letter from UMd. Athletic Director Kevin Anderson, the men's and women's swimming and diving teams must raise $1.4 million by April 1, 2012; $2.8 million by June 30, 2012 and $5.79 million by Dec. 30, 2012.

UMd. President Wallace Loh said that the other teams facing elimination are also likely to receive extended fundraising deadlines and benchmarks if they speak with administration officials.
