UMD Closed Monday As Hurricane Sandy Heads Northward

In the face of Hurricane Sandy's continued northward trek, the University of Maryland is closing Monday. The university said that it made this decision out of commitment to safety for faculty, staff and students.

At this point the university has not announced a Tuesday closure, but said they would announce it no later than 6 p.m. Monday. UMD advises monitoring its homepage and local television and radio broadcasts for additional updates.

The university said it provides its own power and has back-up generators to provide essential power. So several university services and centers will be available.

The dining halls will remain open, though its hours may not follow its regular schedule. The Eppley Recreation Center will also be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., as well as overnight Monday for students who need someplace to sleep, according to the university. Cots and linens will be available.
