Teach Me How to Study

A list of studying tips and tricks by UMd. students for UMd. students.

Happy finals week, everyone! We know finals are the worst thing to happen since, um, last finals week, but just think: In a few days it will be over, and all that accrued knowledge about John Keats/gerrymandering/the Higgs boson will melt away faster than a frozen daiquiri in the hot summer sun.

We rudely interrupted some hard-working students to find out what study tips work best for them. Here's what the told us:

"I put all of my notes - class notes and PowerPoint notes - into one extensive outline that's color-coded. So the black is from the PowerPoints and the red is from my notes and the blue is from Wikipedia." Anna Bondy, Senior Dietetics Major

"I find it's easier to print things out and read them rather than just use the computer all the time, because it's really distracting. So if you really just want to concentrate and get something done, print out your notes and highlight them, and just read them over and over and over. That generally works." Zebib Abraham, Senior Biology Major/English Minor

"Study with people who ask a lot of questions." Lauren Poppe, Junior Food Science Major

"I don't really study." Anonymous

"I make review sheets and just keep reading them. And now I'm turning them into index cards." Alexi Zloof, Freshman Public Relations/History Double Major

"I leave my apartment, because I'm too easily distracted when I'm there. So I have to go somewhere else where other people are working." Allie Edwards, Junior English Major

"To be completely alone and in a secluded area ... so, not this [gestures around noisy Starbucks.] That's my optimal study place." Amy Ding, Junior Finance/Economics Major

"I lock myself in the library for numerous hours at a time." Matthew Tripsas, Sophomore History Major

"Pandora." Hallie Dunn, Junior Special Ed Major
