City-University Partnership Submits Letter of Intent for Public Charter School

Public forum set to learn more about the College Park Academy Public Charter School.

College Park has gotten the ball rolling on a public charter school in the city by submitting preliminary plans to the Prince George’s County public school system.

The college preparatory school is a product of a partnership between the city and the University of Maryland. Students at the school will be able to acquire up to 60 college credits before gradation and receive a personalized learning experience, according to the letter of intent.

The school could open as early as 2013 for grades seven through nine, and it’s expected to grow from 150 students in the first year to 575 students and from seventh through twelfth grades by 2017.

The exact location of the school is yet to be determined.

The partnership will submit a formal proposal to the county school system in February, the Gazette reported.

A public forum about the school is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9 in the council chambers on the second floor of , 4500 Knox Road.

I think this is a great idea. By partnering with the University they could set up a rigourous curriculum that is more on par with schools in other jurisdictions.

Huzzah.I hope they use the old friends school site in Calvert Hills/Old Town. This is exactly the kind of "Partnership" that the city and the university has needed for years.

'Bout time! How about St. Mark's on the Adelphi border with College Park? It would be a great locale, and a good use of now-unutilized space. Or...the U's new East Campus development. The Purple Line runs through the site...keep the car count down! What will tuition cost?
