Prince George's Schools CEO Maxwell Up for National Recognition

Prince George's County Public School CEO Kevin Maxwell is one of four finalists for the 2014 National Superintendent of the Year by AASA, a national association of school administrators. 

“There is no greater honor than to be recognized by your peers,” Maxwell said in a statement.

“This recognition, as I have said before, is one I share with a great number of people in Anne Arundel County because it is the work that we did together that is reflected in this honor. I truly believe that, through our work, we were able to make positive differences in the lives of children and set them up for success they may not otherwise have enjoyed.”

Maxwell, who is a resident of Bowie, was named the 2014 Maryland Superintendent of the Year in November for his work in Anne Arundel County, where he served as superintendent for six years before coming back to PGCPS, where he began his education career in 1978. He was named PGCPS CEO in June after a nearly year-long search. 

"We are extremely proud of Dr. Maxwell’s leadership and the designation of being considered a finalist for the AASA 2014 Superintendent of the Year Award,” Segun Eubanks, PGCPS board chair, said in a statement. “We are proud to have a life-long Prince Georgian and truly accomplished education leader at the helm and together, we are on a journey to greatness here in Prince George's County.” 

The winner of the 2014 National Superintendent of the Year will be announced in February at the AASA National Conference on Education, being hosted this year in Tennessee. A $10,000 college scholarship in the winner's name will be presented to the high school where he or she matriculated, or at another high school in the area now served by the winner. 

The other three finalists are Alberto Carvalho of Miami-Dade Public Schools, Terry Grier of the Houston Independent School District and Michele Taylor of Calhoun City Schools.
