College Park School Supply Drive Underway

The College Park City Council aims to equip all of the city's public school students with school supplies.

To ensure that students enrolled in College Park public schools are equipped with the supplies they need, the College Park mayor and council are hosting a city-wide school supply drive.

During these challenging economic times, principals know that some families cannot afford to buy all the materials that their children need for school, said  Councilmember Denise Mitchell (District 4), the drive's organizer.

"This is the first year for the drive," Mitchell said. "We do not have sponsors. We are asking the residents of College Park, with a heart to give, to donate."

The supply drive will benefit students at Hollywood and Paint Branch elementary schools. Classes for both schools resume Monday, Aug. 23.

The council is asking for No. 2 pencils, colored pencils, pens, glue sticks and yellow highlighters. Additional items such as boxes of facial tissues, hand soaps and sanitizers, paper towels and reams of white paper are also requested.

A full list of supplies can be found at www.collegeparkmd.gov. All items should be new and in their original packaging.

"Additional school supplies are always very much appreciated," said Barbara M. Caskey, principal of Hollywood Elementary School, noting that the economic downturn has induced a greater need for donated supplies the last couple of years.

Supplies should be taken to:

College Park City Hall, 4500 Knox Road
Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Saturday from 1:00 to 9:30 p.m.

or

Davis Hall, 9217 51st Avenue
Monday-Friday from 7:00 a.m to 3:45 pm.
