Voting Continues for Route 1 Ride Bus Design

Pick your favorite look for the Route 1 corrdior's new circulator—voting ends Sept. 9.

The contest to choose a design for the Route 1 Ride bus is drawing to a close, with voting set to end on Sunday, Sept. 9.

, the competition received a total of 38 entries from 27 artists. A panel of 14 community jurors then narrowed the field down to three finalists.

The winning artist's "wrap" will adorn a new circulator in Prince George's County's TheBus system that's set to run between Mount Rainier and northern College Park.

Voters can choose between:

  • Jennifer Axner's Route 1 Paint Tube, which turns the bus into a giant wooden plank upon which rests a large, smeared tube of paint.
  • Matthew Gifford's Let Me Ride, which transforms the bus into a psychedelic wonder bus.
  • Boshwell Talavera's Everything in One Place, which features a large photo mosaic forming the Maryland State Flag on both sides of the bus. 

The competition is sponsored by the Route 1 Ride Collaborative, a collection of government officials, municipal and county government agencies, area non-profits, and community development corporations.

The group's goal is to increase ridership on the Route 1 Ride through creative branding, emphasizing the arts, culture, lifestyle and history of the neighborhoods that line Baltimore and Rhode Island Avenues.
