Rep. Hoyer Says Young People Should be Angry

Representative for Maryland's 5th Congressional District was awarded for political courage, talked economy at University of Maryland.

Democratic Whip Monday evening to be honored by a University of Maryland political research center, to discuss the U.S. economy, and to get the student audience riled up.

They should be angry at the fiscal crisis created by his generation, Hoyer said.

 “The single best thing [Congress] can do is to get our country in a credible, fiscally sustainable path,” said Hoyer, the representative for Maryland's 5th Congressional District.

“We should put all items of expenditure and revenue on the table,” Hoyer said in a follow-up interview with Patch. “We need at least $4 trillion in savings over the next 10 years so we will be fiscally sustainable.”

Among the solutions he suggested was to eliminate tax expenditure loopholes, which he said could provide $1.1 trillion — more than what America collects in annual income taxes.

Hoyer was invited by UMd.’s Center for American Politics and Citizenship (CAPC) to receive the Millard E. Tydings Award for Courage and Leadership in American Politics.

“He was always a truth teller,” said Monica Healy, chairperson of the CAPC advisory board.

After accepting the award, Hoyer answered questions about the federal budget, touching on entitlement programs, the Pell Grant, accessibility to education, social security, spending for the arts and campaign contributions.

Hoyer is the fourth person to receive the award, following Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.).
