Polls Close With 1,063 Votes, Unofficially

Unofficial vote count is in process.

As the clock neared 8 p.m. Tuesday, one election worker hummed the Jeopardy theme song.

“I’m ready,” said election supervisor Chuck Smolka.

He closed the doors two minutes later, when polls also closed, with 664 votes at Davis Hall for districts 1 and 4. At City Hall, where residents of districts 2 and 3 voted, there were 399 votes.

It was a long day for both those working the polls, and for candidates as well, who stayed outside for much of the day electioneering at their respective polling places, even after the sun set.

“I’m really glad today’s the day,” District 1 candidate Christine Nagle said from the area near Davis Hall sectioned off for candidates to stand. She said there's a buildup leading to election day.

One of her opponents Fazlul Kabir shared the sentiment. He said that whether he won or lost in the race against Nagle and candidate Patrick Wojahn, he was pleased with his effort.

He said he knocked on every door in District 1.

“I have come to know many new neighbors,” he said. “The only good feeling is that I went to each and every door in College Park … I was nervous in the beginning because there are so many,” he said.

Nagle, Wojahn and Kabir are competing in one of only two contested races this year. The other is District 3, where incumbent Stephanie Stullich is being challenged by Robert Day and Bob McCeney.

Districts 2 and 4, and the race for mayor are uncontested.

Votes are being tallied at this moment for an unofficial count in the Council Chambers of City Hall.

“The winner tonight may not be the winner. Tomorrow we do a very methodical count," Chief of the Board of Election Supervisors Jack Robson said.

Unofficially, there were 568 votes in District 1; 59 in District 2; 340 in District 3 and 96 for District 4.
