MEETING PREVIEW: Cafritz, Liquor Licenses, Speed Camera Revenue and More

Here's a rundown of agenda items for Tuesday's Mayor and Council work session.

The first two hours of Tuesday’s Mayor and Council work session at 7:30 p.m. is devoted to a public information meeting regarding a development proposal in Riverdale Park, just south of College Park.

The Cafritz Property group hopes to build a Whole Foods Market, retail and office space and nearly 1,000 residential units along the Calvert Hills border. Representatives from the development team will share details about the plan.

Below are the other items on the meeting agenda. Mayor and Council will meet in the Council Chambers on the second floor of , 4500 Knox Road. The full agenda accompanies this post.

  • Council will consider applications for beer, wine and liquor license transfers for two new restaurants in College Park. The first is for Shanghai Tokyo Café at the student apartment high rise, University View II, and the second is for Big Play Sports Grill, which will replace Vito’s Pizzeria. Council will decide whether to support the applications, ahead of Nov. 22 when representatives from both establishments will go before the county’s Board of License Commissioners.
  • College Park planning staff will present a plan to construct a one-way, westbound road between Rhode Island Avenue and Dartmouth Avenue, bounded by College Avenue and Norwich Road. The connector, called Randolph Malcon Avenue, would include 4-foot sidewalks on both sides with parking on the north side, and lined by eight single-family, owner-occupied homes. The planning staff is recommending that the city request $150,000 in federal funds through the Community Development Block Grant to assist with the road construction.
  • Mayor and Council could pass a motion designating speed camera revenue for various public safety purposes. Proposals on the table include financial support for area volunteer fire departments, and new streetlights and crosswalks. All suggestions, which have been discussed at past council meetings, are listed in detail on the full agenda.
