DEVELOPMENT UPDATE: Hotels, Attick Towers and Multi-Family Housing

Are you up to speed with College Park development? The city's bi-monthly newsletter is out.

You might have noticed a gaping, empty plot of land where the rundown College Park Motel sat, just a few short months ago.

That's because construction has begun for the 50-room Best Western hotel to replace it, expected to open by September this year.

This, and several other items were included in the recent bi-monthly update from College Park's Planning, Community and Economic Development Department. Following is a quick summary of some of the other items listed, but the complete newsletter accompanies this post.

  • Hotels, hotels, hotels! In addition to the Best Western, a 75-room extended-stay hotel, operated by Marriott, has been approved for the location at 9220 and 9624 Baltimore Ave. The company behind the project, Baywood Hotels, also plans to replace the existing Howard Johnson and Days Inn with two new hotels and 8,835 square feet of commercial retail and office space. This project has not yet been filed. Developers are also preparing a conceptual site plan for a 150-room hotel and 25,000 square feet of retail space where Koons Ford automotive dealership used to operate, at 8315 Baltimore Ave.
  • Demolition is expected to begin at 7720 Mowatt Lane early February to make way for the Domain at College Park, a 258-multi-family unit complex that will also include 11,400 square feet of retail. The first units should be open for move-in by July 2013. Paired with the future Purple Line West Campus stop, which won't be far from Domain, the area is prime for major redevelopment,
  • The Attick Towers, could be in for renovation. The College Park Housing Authority is exploring options to complete a $5 million rehabilitation of the low-income senior housing complex at 9014 Rhode Island Ave.
  • The newsletter also includes short summaries of the Maryland Book Exchange student-housing project. The developers have submitted revisions to the original design, and the Prince George's County Planning Board approved it with conditions. (.)
