Council to Vote on PGPOA Petitions Tonight

Tuesday night, the College Park City Council will vote on two resolutions that could block a pair of charter amendments proposed by the Prince George’s Property Owners’ Association from reaching a citywide ballot.

One of the petitions would limit the amount of real property tax that the city can collect to the amount collected in 2011. The other would prevent the city from distinguishing between different types of housing.

Because the voters who signed the petitions did not list their voting districts along with their names and addresses, the petitions include “no qualified petition signers,” according to the Board of Election Supervisors (BOES), Patch reported last month. BOES measured the petitions against the city charter requirements for a referendum vote.

The College Park Mayor and Council will begin its regular voting meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Council Chambers of . Those who wish to attend the meeting can pick up a free parking pass on the first floor.

Preceding the meeting are two public hearings. The first, beginning at 7 p.m., will be to discuss the , and at 7:20 p.m., the public can comment on amending the fiscal year 2012 budget to fund for a new public works building and .

Action Items

• Following the public hearing at 7:20 p.m., council could adopt an amendment for the fiscal year 2012 operating budget to . The projects amount to $1.4 million and will be funded through use of an unassigned reserve.
• Council will vote on a motion to approve a change to the agreement with the city’s union, which would allow for a cost-of-living adjustment of 2 percent for fiscal year 2013, and an increase of the city’s matching contribution to the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan by $20 per pay period for some longer-term employees.
