College Park Farmers Market Poised to Expand

The city council will vote Tuesday on whether an additional Farmers Market should open near City Hall.

College Park has one Farmers Market, and depending on how the city council votes on Tuesday, it may get another.

The council will decide whether to allow an additional Farmers Market to operate in the City Hall parking lot.

Four vendors from a Farmers Market that operates in the parking lot of the Ellen Linson Pool on Saturday mornings would come to the City Hall parking lot Sunday mornings to sell fresh fruits, vegetables and some baked goods to shoppers.

The vendors would set up stands between 9 a.m. and 1 or 2 p.m. depending on interest. The market would set up for the first time on Sunday, June 5.
Members of the council said because the area doesn’t have a grocery store within walking distance, the farmers market could provide area residents with a place to buy fresh produce conveniently.

The market could also draw area residents to a downtown area that is left nearly empty when university students leave for the summer.

The vendors at the market would be responsible for the specifics and the town would not have to do anything other than give permission for the space and get the word out to residents.
