City Council to Vote on Strategic Plan

The City Council will vote Tuesday night to adopt two plans to tackle College Park's key issues, from development to education.

The College Park City Council will vote Tuesday night to approve the city's strategic plan for the next five years and the strategic action plan for fiscal year 2011.

The goal of both plans is to provide a framework for College Park staff and council to measure progress in key areas, including public safety, development, the environment and a variety of other hot-button College Park issues, said Councilman Patrick Wojahn (District 1).

The five-year plan is ambitious in scope and seeks to tackle a range of issues, such as rebuilding Route 1 and encouraging development near the College Park Metro station. Other goals are smaller in scale, like ensuring safety in neighborhoods by using contract police and encouraging community participation in helping to reduce crime.

The strategic action plan for 2011 addresses many of the same issues as the five-year plan but on a scale more attainable for a single year. It involves measures such as developing a citywide bicycle route and promoting increased business participation in recycling.

Patch will be tweeting from the meeting and will let you know how the vote goes down. Both plans, however, are expected to pass, Wojahn said.
