City Council Discusses Grants, Contracts at Tuesday’s Meeting

The College Park City Council met Tuesday with a short agenda that included rent stabilization and educational grants. 

Here’s a rundown of the council’s votes.

The city council unanimously approved three measures as part of the council’s consent agenda, with no discussion:

• Allowed a property use agreement for a beer and wine license at , a fast food restaurant at 7415B Baltimore Ave.
• Permitted room for a dog run at a residence on Fox Street, for construction of a fence at a residence on 50th Place, and for a parking permit for a trailer on Chestnut Hill Drive.

The council also unanimously approved the following action items:

• A series of grants totaling $60,000 for students enrolled in public schools around College Park.  Councilmember Patrick Wojahn (Dist. 1) asked the council to consider including Eleanor Roosevelt High School in the list of schools allowed to apply for grants; the council directed his concerns to the Education Action Committee, which is in charge of choosing schools eligible for the grants.
• Councilmember Wojahn asked the council to move discussion for the Action Plan for fiscal year 2013 to a later date to allow residents to bring up concerns with the council.
• City council awarded a $497,550 contract to NZI Construction Corporation for a concrete and asphalt project.  The amount allocated in the budget for this project is less than the amount of the contract, according to Councilmember Marcus Afzali (Dist. 4), who said, “I don’t see any reason not to support it.”
• An introduction by the city council, who announced a public hearing for the ordinance on July 9 at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
