UMd. Student Who Threatened Shooting Rampage Pleads Guilty

Alexander Song, 19, faces mental health monitoring, community service, and up to three years of probation.

Alexander Song, the former University of Maryland student in March, pleaded guilty Tuesday to misuse of telephone facilities and disturbing the peace at a school or college.

The guilty plea carries a sentence of up to three years in prison and would disqualify Song, 19, from purchasing a firearm, according to a statement from the state's attorney's office.

Song was arrested March 11 after threatening on social networking sites to carry out a campus shooting.

A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled, but officials said the state also will recommend three years of supervised probation and monthly status hearings before the court throughout the same period.

Song was released from home detention under the plea but is still subject to a 9 p.m. curfew. He remains banned from the University of Maryland campus.

Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks said in a statement that she intends to lobby the Maryland General Assembly for a law "that would make it a crime to make generalized threats via phone and email."

“This case and the case of Neil Prescott underscore the need for a communicating threats statute,” Alsobrooks said. “I want to ensure that we have the tools to treat these threats with the seriousness they warrant.”
