From the Prince George's County Police Department:

The Prince George’s County Police Department is investigating a murder in College Park. The victim is identified as 20 year-old David Esequel Avelar of the 6600 block of 94th Avenue in Lanham.

On Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at approximately 4:00 am, patrol officers were called to the 9100 block of Baltimore Avenue for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, patrol officers found Avelar suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Avelar was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The preliminary investigation reveals the murder appears gang-related. Avelar had been attending a party at a hotel on Baltimore Avenue. A fight broke out in the parking lot between the group the victim was with and a second group attending a separate party at the same hotel. During that fight, Avelar was shot.

These hotels are an asset to the community, but we need to report suspicious activities immediately. If it doesn't look right, it isn't right.

1) These are motels, not hotels. Motels have all the doors to the rooms outside, and you drive around to your room and often walk up stairs. Hotels are classy modern joints where all the rooms are contained within the building, and you take an elevator to your floor. 2) These run-down motels are NOT assets to the community, they are an embarrasment. Constant prostitution busts, gang parties, and now a murder. Some of these "community assets" charge by the hour rather than by the night. 3) These motels are supposed to be slated for demolition. The City should expedite this in any way possible, and also require that the new hotels replacing them conform to normal industry standards.
