Man Sentenced in Shooting Death of UMd. Student

Deandre Ricardo Williams was sentenced Wednesday to 49 years in prison.

A man charged in the fatal in January 2011 was sentenced Wednesday to 49 years in prison for first-degree murder, The Diamondback reported.

Deandre Ricardo Williams, 24, was also sentenced to serve 20 years for the use of a handgun in a violent crime, which he will serve concurrently with his murder sentence, The Diamondback reported.

Williams entered the College Park home of 22-year-old  on Jan. 11, 2011, to rob him of money and marijuana, according to the statement from the Prince George's County State's Attorney’s Office read at a February plea hearing. When DeSha-Overcash threw a glass jar at Williams' head, Williams shot DeSha-Overcash twice in the abdomen, according to the statement.

” at that February hearing. Though not admitting guilt, the plea meant that the defense and state's attorney agreed upon the evidence for charges. The plea also sent Williams directly to sentencing, without a trial.

The Diamondback reported that several members of DeSha-Overcash’s family and friends read victim impact statements during the three-hour sentencing on Wednesday. Each statement will be entered into Williams’ file and will be seen when he is up for parole, according to The Diamondback.
